events
Between 2000 and 1500 A.D: We suppose that the island was occupied
by a civilization known as pre-ceramic.
About 400 A.D: The first known inhabitants were the Amerindians
or Huecodes, who came from Eastern Venezuela.
About 900 After Christ: The Arawaks, precolombian natives were
chased and replaced by the Caribs, Indians who came from America and
invaded the island and called it : Karukera, the island of beautiful
waters.
1493: Discovery of the island by Christopher Colombus, who called
it Guadeloupe in hommage to the sanctuary of Santa Maria de Guadalupe
de l'Estremadura.
1635: Guadeloupe is placed under the authority of the General
Governor Poincy The Dutch besiege Saint Martin.
1640: Arrival of the first slaves.
1644: The Sugar Industry starts in Guadeloupe.
1648: The island of Saint Martin/ Saint Maarten becomes both
French and Dutch.
1674: Creation of the Indian Company by Colbert. Guadeloupe is
annexed by the Royal Crown.
1685: The Black Code sets up the status of slaves.
1758: Guadeloupe is annexed by England and foundation of Pointe
à Pitre. 1763: Guadeloupe comes back to the French.
1782: In Les Saintes waters, De Grasse is surrendered and defeated
by the English.
1784: Saint Barthélemy becomes the property of Sweden.
1789: Egalitarian principles of the French Revolution have repercussions
on the colonies.
1790: The Assembly allows the colonists the right to elect local
assemblie by universal vote.
1794: The Convention abolishes slavery in all the colonies.
1802: BONAPARTE anhialates the 1794 Bill on Abolition of slavery.
1809: The English re-annex Guadeloupe and Les Saintes.
1814: The Treaty of Paris gives back Guadeloupe and its islands
to France. 1818: Through the actions of the Deputy Victor Schúlcher,
slavery is abolished.
1867: The French West Indies are directly linked to Europe by
the General Transatlantic Company.
1878: Sweden gives back Saint Barthélemy to France.
1914/1918: During the first World War, 52000 West Indians are
engaged in the conflict.
1936: Felix EBOUE becomes the first black governor of Guadeloupe.
1939/1945: Second World War.
1946: Guadeloupe becomes an Overseas Department of France.
1974: The Guadeloupean archipelaggo takes the status of a Region,
administrated by the Prefect, an agent of the State authority
1989: 16 September: The Hurricane Hugo destroy thousands of houses
in Guadeloupe and makes several victims.
1995: 5 September: The islands of Saint Bathélemy and Saint-Martin
are devasted by the Hurricane Luis.
